Frequently asked questions about Tights
Denier (DEN) measures the thickness of the yarn. The higher the number, the thicker and more opaque the tights:
| Denier | Type | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 5–15 DEN | Ultra-sheer | Barely visible, summer, formal occasions |
| 15–30 DEN | Sheer | Lightly translucent, everyday, office |
| 30–50 DEN | Semi-opaque | Semi-translucent, transitional seasons |
| 50–80 DEN | Opaque | Non-transparent, autumn, warm |
| 80–100+ DEN | Thick tights | Very warm, winter-ready |
Rule of thumb: below 20 DEN is transparent, above 50 DEN is opaque.
Runs occur when small snags spread. To reduce the risk:
- Nails: file sharp edges and be careful with rings when putting them on
- Technique: scrunch the tight down to the toe, insert your foot, and roll upward step by step. Never pull the fabric directly
- Size: tights that are too small are under tension and tear more easily
- Clear nail polish: a dab on a small hole stops it from running further
For daily wear, choose at least 20 DEN — thinner is more fragile.
The colour depends on the effect you want:
- Nude: invisible effect, suitable for formal wear and open shoes
- Black: the most versatile colour, pairs with almost everything and has a slimming effect
- Navy or burgundy: stylish alternatives to black
- White or ivory: summery, with light dresses or at weddings
- Colourful or patterned: fashion-forward statement pieces
Tip: when in doubt, go one shade darker than your skin tone for the most natural result.
Tights are one garment running from toe to waist, including a panty section. Stockings are two separate pieces, each covering one leg, usually up to mid-thigh.
Stockings stay up with a suspender belt or with a silicone band (stay-ups). Tights are more practical for daily wear; stockings are popular as lingerie or with vintage looks.
